Two-letter words are the backbone of competitive Scrabble. They let you play parallel to existing words, open up premium squares, and get rid of awkward tiles without sacrificing board control. Knowing every valid 2-letter word is considered the minimum foundation of competitive play – most club and tournament players have them completely memorized.
NWL23 (formerly TWL) is used in North American club and tournament play. Collins CSW21 (also called SOWPODS) is the international standard – it includes 20 additional 2-letter words, many borrowed from British, Scottish, or South African English.
